WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Vern Clark, awarded Navy Times senior writer John Burlage with the Superior Public Service Award for "clear, objective and comprehensive" coverage of Navy issues during his 18-year-career at the weekly publication.

"Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Burlage dedicated himself to informing Sailors and educating the public about their Navy," the CNO cited during an Oct. 4 ceremony, which was also attended by the Vice Chief of Naval Operations, Director of Navy Staff, Deputy CNOs, the Chief of Information (CHINFO) and two former CHINFOs. "His fair and balanced coverage challenged assumptions and encouraged countless Sailors to more deeply invest themselves in the Navy by staying informed and engaged."

Burlage, a retired master chief journalist who served in the Navy for 25 years, worked for Navy Times from October 1984 to October 2002. Burlage said working alongside Sailors has been the highlight of both his careers.
