JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast awarded four American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) contracts for work performed at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island, S.C.
"These projects provided us a great opportunity to award construction contracts to the local community," said Lt. Cmdr. Ronald Jenkins, resident officer in charge of construction, Beaufort. "The ARRA contracts support the community and the program is a great opportunity to include energy conservation measures that will help lower energy consumption in support of the President's energy reduction goals and initiatives."
The first was $1.8 million contract was awarded to SBG Inc. of Greenwood, S.C. on June 25 to replace heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system controls in several buildings at MCRD Parris Island.
Project construction consists of replacing existing control systems with Web-based direct digital controls in various buildings located on MCRD Parris Island.
On Aug. 7, $1.3 million ARRA contract was awarded to SBG Inc. of Greenwood, S.C. to repair Power Plant Building 160, at MCRD Parris Island.
The purpose of this project is to upgrade and modernize Building 160.
The work will consist of repoint and repair aging mortar joints, replacement of cracked bricks, replacement and addition of expansion joints, new exterior windows, new interior and exterior doors, new toilet rooms and installation of combustion air fans and incidental related work.
Then on Aug. 18, $1.9 million contract was awarded to Mitchell Brothers Inc. of Beaufort, S.C. to Replace Windows at the Education Center, Building 923, at MCRD Parris Island.
This construction project includes furnishing labor, materials and equipment required to provide whole house repairs and renovations to Building 923.
The interior work will include new and upgraded interior finishes, doors and windows. Exterior work includes repairs to the existing brick and replacement of exterior windows and doors.
The fourth project was awarded on Aug. 18. The $3 million contract was awarded to Mitchell Brothers Inc. of Beaufort, S.C. for Lighting and HVAC Repairs to the Education Center, Building 283, at MCRD Parris Island.
The work includes providing renovated interior spaces for the Depot Library, Depot Visitor's Center, Depot Public Affairs Office, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, and three shops associated with the visitor's function; a book store, a coffee bar, and a gift shop.
Work also includes demolishing existing obsolete systems and interior finishes and partitions; demolishing and abating asbestos containing and lead containing materials; providing code compliant egress stairs from upper floors to meet life safety codes; and providing all new interior finishes.
The project will also provide new electrical system, new HVAC system, new lighting, new telephone and data communications systems; renovate the bathroom areas to provide code required fixture counts to accommodate the large visitor crowds during recruit graduations; and provide new handicapped access ramps to provide proper building access.
The expected completion date for all work for each contract is August 2010.
ARRA projects are intended to modernize Navy and Marine Corps shore infrastructure, enhance America's energy independence and sustain a steady and robust Maritime Force for decades.
