BETHESDA, Md. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Washington awarded a $41 million firm-fixed price contract July 29 for the construction of a two-story, 151,000 square foot Navy Exchange (NEX) replacement at Naval Support Activity Bethesda (NSAB), Bethesda, Md.

The contract, awarded to Walbridge Brasfield & Gorrie, a Joint Venture, includes the construction of a LEED Silver Certified minimum pursuing Gold, two-story NEX, which will cater to customers and wounded warriors with mobility issues and will feature an elevated parking deck. Scheduled opening is November 2012.

The current NEX, at approximately 60,000 square feet, will expand to become a premier exchange offering many popular brands in all categories. The new NEX will also provide a pharmacy, barber shop, laundry and drying cleaning space and a host of additional services.

"The store building will allow Navy Exchange managers and administration personnel to work within the same building as the sales operation," said John Zulick, the Deputy Officer-in-Charge of Construction, Bethesda, Md.

During construction, temporary Exchange services will be available and customers can also shop online at www.MyNavyExchange.com.

The NEX project is the latest construction contract awarded at NSAB, which is currently undergoing extensive expansion and renovation as part of the integration with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
