NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- USS Truxtun (DDG 103), returned to its Naval Station Norfolk, Va., homeport after completing a Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX) as part of the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group (CSG), Feb. 23.
The exercise is designed to test the strike group and coalition forces' ability to operate in a hostile environment in preparation for a combat deployment.
"JTFEX allows the ships in the CSG to combine unit-level training accomplishment locally, fostering an effective team, to bring the CSG capabilities worldwide," said Cmdr. John H. Ferguson, USS Truxtun commanding officer. "Truxtun conducted and completed high levels of combat capabilities in a stressful environment."
JTFEX tests the capability of a CSG to operate with multinational forces in a joint environment, which included the Spanish frigate ESPS Almirante Juan de Borbon (F 102) and French frigate FS Primauguet (D 644).
"This being our first JTFEX, it was a great opportunity to train with more experienced ships in the strike group," said Fire Controlman 1st Class (SW/AW) Tammie T. Moore, strike leading petty officer and engagement manager. "Now, after completing JTFEX, Truxtun is able to function together. I am confident in our ability to perform well in the upcoming deployment."
Truxtun Sailors will now have the opportunity to spend time with their families before deploying.
"We have a lot of upcoming pre-deployment briefs for the Sailors and their families," said Command Master Chief (SW/AW) Paulette Brock. "Truxtun's chief's mess has developed a comprehensive check for getting the individual Sailor ready and the family prepared for deployment."
Along with USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), GHWB Strike Group assets participating in COMPTUEX/JTFEX include USS Mitscher (DDG 57), USS Gettysburg (CG 64), USS Anzio (CG 68), the squadrons of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8, the Spanish frigate ESPS Almirante Juan de Borbn (F 102) and the French frigate FS Primauguet (D 644).
