NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- USS Mitscher (DDG 57), pulled into its Naval Station Norfolk, Va., homeport after completing a joint task force exercise (JTFEX), Feb. 23.
JTFEX was the last in a series of exercises designed to prepare Mitscher for an upcoming deployment as part of the George H.W. Bush (GHWB) Carrier Strike Group.
"JTFEX is the culmination of training qualifications," said Cmdr. Brian K. Sorenson, USS Mitscher, commanding officer. "It's designed to make the carrier strike group able to integrate itself into a joint task force anywhere in the world."
Sorenson said Mitscher played a multi-mission role within the strike group.
"We conducted anti-air, anti-surface, antisubmarine and strike warfare," said Sorenson. "We're an offensive and a defensive weapon. We are able to protect the carrier and the strike group, as well as project power ashore."
Sorenson is pleased with the results of JTFEX and the previous exercise conducted in conjunction with JTFEX; a composite training unit exercise (COMPTUEX), which Mistcher wrapped up Feb. 11, with a port visit to Port Everglades, Fla.
"I think we performed magnificently," said Sorenson. "We've learned a lot, and we've grown as a team. I can't wait to go on deployment. We've got the best crew, and we've worked very hard to be able to accomplish any mission anywhere."
Mistcher had been underway since Jan. 19.
"It feels fantastic to be home," Sorenson said. "The crew is tired. They've been working really hard and it's wonderful to let them all go home for some well deserved rest and relaxation with their families."
Along with USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), GHWB Strike Group assets that participated in JTFEX included USS Mitscher (DDG 57), USS Gettysburg (CG 64), USS Truxtun (DDG 103), USS Anzio (CG 68), the squadrons of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8, the Spanish frigate ESPS Almirante Juan de Borbon (F 102) and the French frigate FS Primauguet (D 644). GHWB Strike Group is scheduled to depart for its first overseas deployment in the spring.
