NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- USS Mitscher (DDG 57) treated family members and friends to an eight-hour cruise on the Atlantic Ocean, April 8.

Mitscher's Family and Friends Cruise showcased the ship's capabilities and her crew's daily operations.

"This event is designed to allow every Sailor aboard Mitscher to take their family and friends underway," said Cmdr. Brian Sorenson, Mitscher's commanding officer. "It gives the family members an opportunity to understand what their Sailors are doing when we deploy and go around the world defending our liberties for months at a time."

The day's events included a captain's call, static small arms display, a high-speed run, lunch on the mess decks, a ship weapons demonstration and a damage control equipment demonstration.

"The feedback I have had is excellent," said Sorenson. "The weather wasn't quite as warm as yesterday, but everybody had a smile on their face and I heard nothing but good comments about how excited the crew was to show what they do and to educate the guests on how a ship works."

Mitscher is scheduled to deploy with the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) Carrier Strike Group in May for a regularly schedule deployment.
