NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- The Navy has announced it will not conduct the annual Great Lakes Cruise 2002 as originally planned.
The decision was based on a significant increase in Naval presence requirements, homeland security efforts and continued support for several other forward deployments. Current operational commitments, combined with the sharp increase in funding necessary to provide requisite security measures for port visits led to this decision.
There have been 22 previous Great Lakes Cruises since the program began in the late '60s. Future participation will be evaluated as force structure, budgeting and operational commitments permit.
