NISIDA, Italy (NNS) -- Commander, Submarine Group 8, and Commander Submarines, Allied Naval Forces South, held a change of command ceremony at Allied Maritime Command in Naples, Italy, May 31.
During the ceremony, Rear Adm. James G. Foggo III turned over command to Rear Adm. Frederick J. Roegge.
"Two years ago, I stood right here to assume command of Submarine Group Eight and Allied Submarines South from then-Rear Adm. John Richardson," said Foggo. "I assumed this daunting task with a sense of awe and great humility, and I now depart with an incredible sense of gratitude and pride - gratitude for all of you who helped me and pride in the teamwork, selfless dedication to service and camaraderie."
Adm. James Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and commander, U.S. European Command, spoke highly of Foggo's tour in Naples and service in the Navy.
"[Foggo's] time here in Naples was an amazing journey," said Stavridis. "His efforts during U.S. and NATO operations were executed flawlessly, and when we stood up Operation Odyssey Dawn, his work with our NATO partners was crucial to the success of that mission. I could not be more proud of his accomplishments here in Naples."
Stavridis presented Foggo with the NATO Meritorious Service Medal for his supporting efforts in U.S. and NATO operations throughout Europe and Africa.
After Roegge assumed command, he thanked Foggo and greeted his new crew.
"For Rear Adm. Foggo and [his wife] Cindy, congratulations on the job very well done by both of you, we are excited for the challenge and opportunity to try to carry further forward all the great things you've accomplished here," said Roegge. "To the staffs of U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa, U.S. 6th Fleet, Submarine Group Eight, and Allied Maritime Component Command Naples - I have been very impressed by your professionalism, dedication, and experience; and by the importance of our tasks. I look forward to working with you to make valuable contributions every day in order to accomplish them."
Roegge comes to Naples after serving as deputy commander, Joint Functional Component Command for Global Strike at U.S. Strategic Command in Omaha, Neb. He is an honors graduate of the University of Minnesota and earned his commission through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps.
Foggo will continue his career as he departs from Naples for Washington, D.C., to assume the duties as director, Assessment Division, for the Office of Chief of Naval Operations.
