Carter Hall Holds Change of Command

NORFOLK (NNS) -- USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) held a change of command ceremony aboard Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, Nov. 16.

Cmdr. Greg Blyden relieved Cmdr. Damon Amaral as commanding officer.

Guest speaker, Capt. Jeffrey K. Hayhurst, commander, Naval Surface Forces, U. S. Atlantic Fleet assistant chief of staff amphibious readiness and assessments, served with Amaral on board USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and praised Amaral's work ethic, leadership, and ability to get the job done the first time.

Amaral applauded and paid tribute to the Sailors and Marines in each of the different Carter Hall departments. He concluded with a final note of admiration and advice for the crew.

Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group 2, Rear Adm. Ann Phillips presented Amaral with a Meritorious Service Medal for his exemplary performance as Carter Hall's commanding officer.

Upon assuming command, Blyden praised the crew for their excellent work thus far and asked them to continue their hard work to meet the demands of the Navy. Blyden assumes command after serving as the executive officer of Carter Hall since June 2011.

Blyden's first division officer sea tour was aboard USS Estocin (FFG 15) as first lieutenant. Following completion of the nuclear training pipeline, he served iaboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) as reactor electrical division officer during her maiden deployment. He later completed department head tours as operations officer aboard USS Ford (FFG 54) and main propulsion assistant aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71).
