USS BONHOMMED RICHARD, At Sea (NNS) -- Commander, Naval Surface Forces Pacific awarded the 2014 Battle Efficiency (Battle "E") to forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) in a message released, March 21.
The Battle "E" and Command Excellence Awards recognize consistent superior performance in an operational environment, and continuous readiness throughout the Fleet Readiness Training Plan cycle.
Capt. Joey Tynch, Bonhomme Richard's commanding officer explained what the honor meant to him.
"The Battle 'E' is the direct result of a lot of long hours, longer days and a solid year's worth of hard work by the BHR team. Every Sailor and every department had an important role in making it happen - it was a complete team effort," said Tynch. "I couldn't be more proud of each and every Sailor onboard than I am now. We are BHR and we're looking forward to working hard, working smart and working together during 2014!"
For ships to be eligible for the Battle "E" demands daily demonstrated excellence, as well as, superior achievement during certifications and qualifications throughout the one-year competitive period.
Ships compete in five categories: maritime warfare, engineering/survivability, command and control communications and information, and logistics management and ship safety.
News of the award was a surprise for some of the crew.
"This is my second Battle "E" onboard the USS Bonhomme Richard," said Yeoman 3rd Class Jacob White. "It's pretty impressive, I think, to get two on the same ship, on the same tour, you don't hear about that very often. It's pretty exciting. I don't think it was as expected this time. We work really hard every deployment, but I think this one was more of a challenge to get."
This is the 7th Battle "E" award Bonhomme Richard has earned since her commissioning Aug. 15, 1998. Bonhomme Richard's prior awards include, six Maritime Warfare Excellence Awards, six Engineering / Survivability Excellence Awards, two Command and Control Communications and Information Warfare Excellence Awards, nine Logistics Management Excellence Awards and seven Ship Safety Excellence Awards.
Bonhomme Richard is the lead ship of the Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group and, with the embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (31st MEU) and Commander, Amphibious Squadron 11 (CPR 11), is currently conducting joint force operations in the U.S. 7th Fleet Area of Responsibility.
