STRAITS OF FLORIDA (NNS) -- During routine testing off the coast of Key West, the Aerostat tethered off the Joint High Speed Vessel USNS Spearhead (JHSV-1) was struck by lightning at 12:21 in the morning, June 12.

The Aerostat provides an aerodynamically stable, reliable and cost-effective aerial platform for a variety of missions.

The lightning strike caused the Aerostat to deflate and land in the water.

Response efforts were delayed as the thunderstorm moved into the area. The Aerostat was subsequently sunk so to pose no hazard to other vessels or navigation.

The incident is under investigation.
