NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- More than 10,000 Sailors of the USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) Battle Group (CVBG) are participating in Phase II of Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX) 02-1, running Feb. 7-14. Phase I of the exercise was completed Jan. 19 through 26.
The JTFEX is designed to meet the requirement for quality, realistic training to prepare U.S. forces for joint and combined operations and also provides the opportunity to certify the CVBG for deployment.
This particular JTFEX was scheduled for two phases to accommodate recent repairs to the carrier, which required it to be pierside during Phase I. The exercise will take place in the waters off the East Coast, as well as on training ranges in North Carolina and Florida.
"In Phase II, we are going to focus on integrating the air wing and the carrier and stressing their ability to fight as a team," said Vice Adm. Cutler Dawson, commander of the U.S. 2nd Fleet, who will conduct the exercise. "But we will also be putting the entire battle group through its paces with a series of dynamic and challenging combat scenarios. We will be building on what they accomplished in Phase I, and I am confident the John F. Kennedy and its battle group will be ready for all tasking while deployed."
A deployment date for the battle group will be announced at the appropriate time.

Kennedy (CV 67), with Carrier Air Wing 7 embarked; commander, Destroyer Squadron 24; USS Hue City (CG 66); USS Vicksburg (CG 69); USS Carney (DDG 64); USS The Sullivans (DDG 68); USS Roosevelt (DDG 80); USS Spruance (DD 963); USS Underwood (FFG 36); USS Taylor (FFG 50); USS Toledo (SSN 769); USS Boise (SSN 764); and USS Seattle (AOE 3).
