DAHLGREN, Va. (NNS) -- The Navy's Open Architecture (OA) Test Facility opened July 2 at Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Dahlgren.
The facility was opened under the sponsorship of Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition John Young, and the dedicated work of the DD(X) computing team from Raytheon working side by side with NSWC Dahlgren engineers.
"We have talked about Open Architecture for years," said Rear Adm. Tom Bush, program executive officer for IWS. "We have known it was the right thing to do. IWS is 100 percent dedicated to get it done.
The OA Test Facility is the first mainstream Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) computing equipment suite to support the Navy's OA initiative for sea based warfighting systems development. OA is the Navy's approach to producing a computing environment that enables affordable, maintainable and easily upgradeable warfighting capability for the future - all based on commercially available standards and equipment.
The test facility is currently running on more than 200 multiple brand computers, with multiple standards-based operating systems providing computing and network power, to exchange and process more than 200 billion bits of information per second.
An open architecture approach holds the potential for significant savings in the development, testing and life cycle maintenance of Navy computing systems and software, with a substantial decrease in time to deliver software products to the fleet.
"We believe that this is a significant step for achieving a total ship computing environment in building the technical and functional architectures required to meet the Navy's OA goals and objectives, not just on DD(X)," said Bush. "We share the vision of Secretary Young in making the open architecture computing environment the boilerplate for future systems. CVN 21 is a good example. Sea Enterprise says 'buy it once.' That's why OA is the enabler to bring affordable warfighting capability to the fleet."
The OA Test Facility provides an extensive and varied computing plant for validation of key aspects of the OA initiative by Navy and Navy defense contractors. Industry participation in building and using this facility to validate their concepts and products will enable greater insight by and collaboration with the government and ultimately result in streamline certification and accelerated delivery of key warfighting products to the fleet.
"We are committed to building common combat systems across all of our surface and subsurface platforms" said Young, "Common modules and warfare applications, built once and used across many platforms is the only way we will build combat systems going forward. This is the first step to achieving that vision."
