WATERS NEAR GUAM (NNS) -- Cooks from the Valley organization volunteers grilled steaks for Sailors aboard the Arleigh-Burke class guided-missile destroyer USS Halsey (DDG 97), Nov. 6.

Based out of Bakersfield, Calif., Cooks from the Valley is an organization of business people from different parts of the country that get together on their own time and money to say thank you to the military for what they do, according to Cooks from the Valley volunteer Jeff Peters.

"I was never able to serve and I've always looked for something to go out and say thank you to all of the people that give us the freedoms that we have every day," said Mike George, Cooks from the Valley volunteer.

Members of the organization prepared and grilled 450 steaks for Sailors on the flight deck during a steel beach picnic.

"The steak tasted great," said Operations Specialist 3rd Class Connor Woodard. "I'm thankful that they came out and shared this experience with us."

Cooks from the Valley have been operating since 2001 and have delivered approximately 53 tons of steaks to more than 140,000 Sailors and Marines around the world. .

The volunteers also visited the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Antietam (CG 54) as part of the George Washington Carrier Strike Group.

"The barbecue is great but my favorite part is walking around and shaking hands and speaking with the Sailors," said Peters. "It gives us hope, and it makes me feel good."

Halsey is on deployment in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
