PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain (NNS) -- The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Farragut (DDG 99) departed Palma de Mallorca, Spain, April 1, completing its second port visit while in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.
"It has been an extremely memorable visit to Palma for the entire crew. The opportunity to meet the people of Palma while enjoying their breathtaking scenery and remarkable culture is an experience that none of us will soon forget," said Cmdr. Cory Applebee, commanding officer onboard Farragut.
Applebee conducted office visits to Capt. Roberto Ortiz, Commander Spanish Naval Sector, Balearic Islands, Ms. Teresa Palmer, Spanish Civil Delegate to the Balearic Islands, and Mr. Alberto Pons, President of the Port Authority for the Balearic Islands.
During the visit, crew members explored the island and took in Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) tours of the local Drach caves. Farragut crew members also provided ship tours to several Spanish military members.
Farragut Sailors also volunteered to help at the Handisport Foundation, which provides sports for disabled residents and tourists.
"This was my first time seeing a sporting event of this size designed specifically for people with disabilities, and it's amazing that the Handisport Foundation in Mallorca is able to provide such a great resource," said Machinist's Mate Fireman Devante Debrowpons. "I saw people from all over the world in attendance, competing and having a great time. I was very happy to be a part of it all."
Farragut is part of the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG), which is composed of the flagship, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1, the guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60), and the guided-missile destroyers USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98) and USS Winston S.
