A Day at the (Steel) Beach

A Day at the (Steel) Beach Aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike) held a steel beach picnic on the ship's flight deck and in the hangar bay as a respite for the hard-working crew following six consecutive weeks at sea, Aug. 6.

The steel beach picnic included grilled ribs, bratwurst, burgers, hot dogs, music and a multitude of games set up in the hangar bay. Ike's Supply Department, S-2 division, also provided an assortment of sodas, cookies and other treats.

Volunteers came to hand out refreshments, man the grills and keep the ice stocked.

Ike's volunteers included the Chief Petty Officer Association, First Class Petty Officer Association and Second Class Petty Officer Association.

Sailors who made their way to Ike's hanger bay were given an opportunity to relax and enjoy the food, music and the company of their fellow shipmates.

"It was a good time," said Seaman Tunyia Clark. "After being underway for such a long time it was really enjoyable to relax and enjoy some good food."

Games such as basketball were set up by Ike's Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) team for the enjoyment of Sailors. MWR also had a volunteer DJ playing music for steel beach participants to listen and dance to.

Sailors who left the hanger bay at the end of the day appeared satisfied with the food and time to relax.

"The food was great and the games in the hangar bay were a lot of fun," said Aviation Boatswain's Mate 3rd Class Skyler Halbeisen. "Everybody was out and about and got a chance to relieve some stress and tension. It was a good break from the regular work days."
