Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Jacksonville celebrated cultural diversity during the 2015 Hispanic Heritage Month Presentation on Naval Air Station Jacksonville.
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year from September 15 to October 15. These dates are significant as they include the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Chile and Belize.
Dr. Cristina Echeverry, director, Greater Jacksonville Campuses, Webster University, addressed the gathering providing insight on her experience growing up Hispanic.
"When I was a child, traditional Hispanic families would stay together. If one person decided to move, the whole family moved," Echeverry said. "While that isn't always the case now, Hispanic connections to family are usually deep and go beyond borders. It doesn't matter where your family is from, Hispanic doesn't refer to any race but rather to origins, [such as] Puerto Rican, South or Central American or other Spanish cultures."
The annual Hispanic Heritage Presentation culminated with a pot luck luncheon showcasing many traditional Hispanic dishes, mirroring the cultural diversity at the command.
