Rear Admiral Louis Tripoli

Rear Adm. Louis Tripoli served as the command surgeon (J07) for US Indo-Pacific Command in Honolulu, Hawaii, from February 2018 to September 2020. He is a medical officer with board certification in Internal Medicine and expertise in infectious diseases, and practices medicine at Tripler Army Medical Center and is a member of the faculty of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Prior notable military assignments include commanding officer of Expeditionary Medical Facility Camp Pendleton and officer in charge of Navy Expeditionary Medical Unit in Landstuhl, Germany. He served in the US Marine Corps in combat operations in and around Fallujah, Iraq, as a medical and public health officer and earned the Naval Officer Billet Code for Civil Affairs and the Fleet Marine Force ribbon. He also served at Navy Personnel Command as senior medical officer.

Tripoli received his education at Harvard and his medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also undertook residency and became chief resident. He is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, American College of Physicians, American Academy of Family Physicians, and others. The medical faculty at the University of Pittsburgh elected him to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He has held appointments to the medical faculties at the University of Pittsburgh, Johns Hopkins University and St. Louis University Institute for Biosecurity. He is the author of several book chapters and scientific research articles and holds two U.S. patents for medication safety technology.

His military awards Include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (two); the Bronze Star (US Marines); Meritorious Service Medals (one Army and three Navy awards); Global War on Terrorism Fleet Marine Force device, and others. In 2006, the Navy Times named him Sailor of the Year.  He is the recipient of the Naval War College Vice Admiral John T. Hayward Award for Outstanding Performance in Correspondence Education.

As a Reservist, when not on active duty, he has served as a senior medical executive in several prominent healthcare organizations in the civilian sector.
