Rear Admiral Susan BryerJoyner

Rear Adm. Susan BryerJoyner is a native of Savannah, Georgia. She received her commission in 1991 through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering. She also holds a Master of Science in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School and a Master of Science in Government Information Leadership from the Information Resources Management College at National Defense University.
Her operational tours include deployments to the high north and Norwegian Seas for the Navy’s first Dynamic Force Employment deployment and to the Mediterranean and Arabian Seas, the Western and South Pacific Ocean, and Iraq in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and Tomodachi.
Fleet assignments include information warfare commander for Carrier Strike Group 8 embarked onboard USS George Washington (CVN 73) and assistant chief of staff for N6 for U.S. 7th Fleet embarked onboard USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19). She also served as communications and information systems department head for USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) and flag communications officer for Carrier Strike Group 8 embarked on USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75).
She commanded the Hopper Information Services Center, providing critical information services supporting global maritime and joint intelligence operations.
Other shore assignments include senior military assistant to the Department of Defense Chief Information Officer; cybersecurity branch chief assigned to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations; flag aide to the first Commander, Naval Network Warfare Command; and flag aide to the Director, Space, Information Warfare, Command and Control Directorate in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. She also served at the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station, Mediterranean and the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station, Far East.
Joint tours include U.S. Pacific Command; Joint Warfare Analysis Center; Multi-National Force Iraq; and U.S. Cyber Command. BryerJoyner is currently serving as Navy Cyber Security division director, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.
She is the recipient of various personal, unit, and campaign awards including the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit Medal (three awards), Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), and Navy Meritorious Service Medal (three awards). She was a recipient of the Copernicus Award in 2001 and 2006, and is a proud Plank Owner of the Information Professional Community and the Naval Network Warfare Command.
