Rear Admiral Sean Filipowski

Rear Adm. Sean Filipowski is a native of New Jersey. He graduated and was commissioned in 1982 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and subsequently graduated from the Naval War College in 1994.

Originally a submarine strategic weapons system officer, Filipowski served his initial assignment aboard USS Nathanael Greene (SSBN 636), followed by duty at Commander, Submarine Squadron (COMSUBRON) 18. He re-designated in 1987 as a special duty officer (cryptology), information warfare officer.

Filipowski’s shore assignments have included U.S. Naval Security Group Activity Misawa, Japan, as division officer, assistant department head and as executive officer; National Security Agency and the Naval Network Warfare Command. As a flag officer, he has served as director of Electronic and Cyber Warfare for Information Dominance; deputy director of Operations at U.S. Cyber Command; director of Intelligence at U.S. Cyber Command; director of Warfare Integration for Information Dominance; and senior military advisor for cyber, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. He last served as deputy director of Operations, National Security Agency/ Central Security Service.

His operational assignments have included commander in chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet Staff; commander, Carrier Group 7 staff, aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68) which deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of Operations Southern Watch and Vigilant Sentinel; the Joint Special Operations Command where he deployed to Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Aviano, Italy, in support of Operation Joint Guard; and commander, U.S. 7th Fleet staff, aboard USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19), which deployed throughout the Western Pacific. He commanded both U.S. Naval Security Group Activity Yokosuka, Japan, and Navy Information Operations Command Georgia.

Filipowski is the recipient of various personal and campaign awards including the Defense Superior Service Medal (three awards), Legion of Merit (four awards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards).
