Rear Adm. Tom Reck is a native of Southampton, Pennsylvania, and a 1985 graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is also a graduate of the Naval War College and Joint Forces Staff College. He is a graduate of National Defense University, Naval War College, Naval Postgraduate School, Harvard Executive Education and NATO School curriculums.
Reck’s first operational assignment was with the ‘Proud Pegasus’ of Patrol Squadron (VP) 11 at Naval Air Station (NAS) Brunswick, Maine, where he completed two deployments, one in support of Operation Desert Shield. After being selected for the NATO Personnel Exchange Program (PEP) he reported to 405 Maritime Patrol Squadron as a Canadian exchange pilot flying the CP-140 Aurora (P-3 Orion).
In 1994, Reck reported to the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) while on deployment in the Persian Gulf. He served as a catapult and arresting gear officer (Shooter) and as an air department division officer while completing a Western Pacific deployment in support of Operation Southern Watch.
Reck transitioned to the Reserve Component in 1995 with the “Minutemen” of VP-92. He served in a variety of billets before assuming command in 2004. During his tenure as executive officer and commanding officer, VP-92 was awarded the Noel Davis Trophy “Battle E”, the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Safety “S” Award and the Golden Wrench for maintenance excellence. Subsequent command tours included: Navy Reserve (NR) NAS Sigonella 0192 augment unit, NR NATO Deployable Joint Task Force Det. Bravo and Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet Det. 802. Staff assignments included U.S. Fleet Forces Command Reserve chief staff officer. His initial flag assignment was as the vice commander, U.S. 6th Fleet; and director, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet Maritime Partnership Program in Naples, Italy.
He assumed his most recent duties as reserve director, Warfare Integration (OPNAV N9IR) in October 2016.
He has proudly served with shipmates who have earned the Navy Unit Commendation, Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, three Noel Davis Battle “E” Trophies, four Golden Wrench Maintenance Excellence Awards and the 2005 CNO Safety Award. He is authorized to wear the Legion of Merit (three awards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy Commendation Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal (four awards).
