Rear Adm. Asselta is a native of Whitesboro, New York. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology and was commissioned an Ensign through Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship program in 1990. He also holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University.
His active component tours include assignments in Public Works, Mount Clemens, Michigan; assistant resident officer in charge of Construction, Lakehurst, New Jersey; Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Seven, Gulfport, Mississippi; and Second Naval Construction Brigade, Little Creek, Virginia.

Upon completing his tour he deployed with Third Naval Construction Regiment to Afghanistan and had charge of operations of the 5,800 Combat and General Engineer Task Force. His most recent tour was as commander, Seventh Naval Construction Regiment and deputy commander, Naval Construction Group Two, Gulfport, Mississippi.
Asselta is a Seabee Combat Warfare Officer, a registered professional engineer in the states of Florida and Delaware. He is a member of the Acquisition Professional Community with a Certification to Level III. His awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (5 awards), Navy Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal and various unit awards.
