Rear Adm. Susan BryerJoyner is a native of Savannah, Georgia. She received her commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering in 1991. She holds a Master of Science in Computer Science, Naval Postgraduate School and a Master of Science in Government Information Leadership, Information Resources Management College at National Defense University.

At sea, she served as Information Warfare Commander for Commander, Carrier Strike Group 8 embarked USS Harry S Truman (CVN75) during Operation Inherent Resolve; Assistant Chief of Staff (N6) for Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet embarked USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19); Department Head, Communications and Information Systems on USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) during Operation Tomodachi; Flag Communications Officer for Commander, Carrier Strike Group 8 embarked USS George Washington (CVN 73).

Shore assignments include Branch Chief, Cybersecurity Plans & Policy Branch in N2N6D, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations; Commanding Officer of Hopper Information Services Center; ); Flag Aide to Commander, Naval Network Warfare Command; Flag Aide to Director, Space, Information Warfare, Command and Control (N6), Office of the Chief of Naval Operations; Department Head, Telecommunications, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station, Far East; Officer in Charge, Japan Regional Network Operations Center, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station, Far East; Communications Traffic Officer, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Mediterranean; Assistant Department Head, Supply/Fiscal, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Mediterranean.

Joint tours include Senior Military Advisor for DoD Chief Information Officer; Division Chief, Future DoDIN Operations & Planning Division at U.S. Cyber Command; Branch Head for Knowledge Management at Multi-National Force Iraq; Deputy J6 / CIO / CKO at Joint Warfare Analysis Center; and Assistant to Branch Chief, IT Security Management at U.S. Pacific Command.

Personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit Medal, and Bronze Star Medal. She was a recipient of the Copernicus Award in 2001 and 2006 and is a proud Plank Owner of the Information Professional Community, Information Warfare Community, and Naval Network Warfare Command.
