Rear Adm. Craig, a native of Anderson, Ind., graduated from Indiana University and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the United States Marine Corps in May 1982.After graduation from "The Basic School" in Quantico, Va., he completed flight training in Pensacola, Florida., and Kingsville, Texas, and was designated a naval aviator in July 1984. Shortly after reporting for training in the F-4S at Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFAT) 101, he was transferred to the United States Navy due to USMC squadron over-manning and commissioned a Lt. j.g.

At sea, he deployed with Attack Squadron (VA) 22 embarked aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 65); Fighter Attack Squadron (VFA) 27 embarked aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), and VFA-115 as executive officer and commanding officer embarked aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). He commanded Carrier Air Wing 14 embarked aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) and USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76).

In March 1995, Craig attended the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, graduated "with distinction" and earned a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies.
Ashore, he served as a Defense Suppression, Strike Warfare, Air Wing training instructor and editor of the tactical publication, "Aimpoint," at the Naval Strike Warfare Center; operations officer, Strike Fighter Wing Pacific Fleet; FA-18 Hornet and Super Hornet requirements officer on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations; deputy combined air operations center director and deputy director of Operations for Joint Task Force-Southwest Asia (JTF-SWA) at Prince Sultan Air Base, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. On the Joint Staff, he served as chief for the Studies, Analysis and Gaming Division (SAGD), and chief of staff and executive assistant to the Director, Force Structure, Resources, and Assessment (J-8). He joined the staff of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and U.S. 5th Fleet in August 2008, and served as the chief of staff, and the director, Maritime Operations Center (MOC).

Craig’s first assignment as a flag officer was deputy chief of Staff Fleet Policy, Capabilities Requirements, Concepts, and Experimentation (N5/N8/N9) at United States Fleet Forces Command, Norfolk, Virginia.
