Rear Admiral Douglas J. McAneny is a 1978 graduate of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln Naval Reserve Officers Training Unit, where he earned a Bachelor of Science, in Civil Engineering. He also holds a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of Oklahoma. McAneny entered the Navy in May 1978 and qualified in submarines, earning his Gold Dolphins in May 1981.
McAneny reported as commandant, National War College in January 2011. McAneny has commanded on four occasions in the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. These include commander, Submarine Force U. S. Pacific Fleet Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, 2008-2010; commander, Submarine Group Seven, Yokosuka, Japan, 2006-2008; and commander, Submarine Squadron Eleven, San Diego, 2002-2004.

His personal decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal (three awards), Legion of Merit (six awards), Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards).
