Rear Adm. Brian Metcalf, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, is a 1994 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture and holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Naval Post Graduate School.
At sea, he served on USS San Jacinto (CG 56) and USS Briscoe (DD 977). After qualifying as an Engineering Duty Officer in 2001, he served at Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Newport News and on the Board of Inspection and Survey until 2006.
Metcalf began his acquisition career in PEO Aircraft Carriers in the CVN 21 Program Office. Following a 2008 deployment to Baghdad, Iraq with the US Army Corps of Engineers, he served in PEO Ships in the San Antonio (LPD 17) Class Program. In 2010, he reported to Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Bath, Maine as the Program Manager’s Representative for DDG 1000, and then returned to Washington D.C. to serve as the Chief of Staff for the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Ships).
He assumed command in August 2016 as Major Program Manager for the San Antonio (LPD 17) Class Program. Metcalf then served as the Executive Assistant to Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). In July 2020, he was selected to command as Major Program Manager for the Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) Class Program.
Following his command tours, Metcalf served as the NAVSEA Vice Commander. He assumed his current duties as Program Executive Officer, Ships in May 2025.
Metcalf’s awards include the Legion of Merit (four awards), Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Achievement Medal (three awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
