Rear Admiral Young is a native of the National Capital Region. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1995 earning a Bachelor of Science in History. He subsequently entered flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1997.  He holds a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College (USNWC). He is also a graduate of the USNWC’s Maritime Advanced Warfighting School and the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN).

Operationally, he has completed nine carrier deployments to the Western Pacific, South China Sea, Mediterranean, and North Arabian Sea, supporting Operations Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom. Assignments include Strike Fighter Squadrons (VFA) 137 Kestrels, VFA-27 Royal Maces, command of the VFA-105 Gunslingers, as well as Carrier Air Wing 5 (Forward Deployed Naval Forces Japan).

Ashore assignments include instructor duty at the Strike Fighter Weapons School Pacific; liaison officer to the National Counter Terrorism Center for U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM); assignments officer at Navy Personnel Command (NPC); and Director Aviation Officer Distribution (PERS-43) at NPC.

In July 2023, Young assumed duties as Director of Operations and Plans (N3) supporting operational matters related to current operations, plans, force management, antiterrorism/force protection, ocean systems, nuclear powered warships, personnel augmentation and continuity of operations for Office of Chief of Naval Operations.

Young has accumulated more than 3,500 flight hours in the F/A-18A-F and over 1,100 arrested landings on 10 different aircraft carriers.
