More than 1,300 Sailors and Marines manned the rails aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) as she moored at Pier 88 in Manhattan for the start of Fleet Week New York 2017, May 24.

Fleet Week New York, now in its 29th year, is scheduled to run from May 24 to May 30.

"Pulling into Fleet Week as part of the Kearsarge team is absolutely incredible," said Command Master Chief Petty Officer Jason A. Knupp. "To be able to show off Kearsarge and her Sailors and Marines, and get ready for New York City is a wonderful event."

While in port, service members will enjoy liberty and participate in a variety of scheduled events including community service projects.

"It's pretty exciting to pull in. There are a lot of things going on, and I'm excited to see New York for the first time," said Chief Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) Brad Grayson.

Not only will service members have the opportunity to explore the city of New York, but citizens and visitors of New York will have the opportunity to tour Kearsarge and talk with Sailors and Marines.

"I think it's good for Americans to see what their fleet is like and see how their Sailors and Marines work together," said Aviation Electrician's Mate 1st Class Lee Davis.

The theme for this year's Fleet Week New York 2017 is "Celebrating the Sea Services and Commemorating the 75th anniversarty of the Seabees."
