The crew of the Arleigh Burke-class, guided-missile destroyer USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) recently completed the Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) assessment and received an overall assessment score of 92% - well above the class average.

During a three-day span, 93 inspectors assessed installed systems throughout the ship. The assessment is designed to test the ship's material readiness to conduct operations in the world's most demanding environments. It consisted of underway demonstrations, engineering plant and steering checks, air defense, self-defense, undersea warfare detect-to-engage sequences, and live-fire gunnery events.

The destroyer returned to port the morning of the second day and immediately transitioned to the in-port phase of INSURV, during which Sailors presented their spaces by demonstrating hundreds of equipment and material checks to the inspectors.

"I couldn't be more proud of the crew for their achievement during INSURV," said Cmdr. Kevin Hoffman, Jason Dunham commanding officer. "This is truly a testament to their ability to plan ahead, simultaneously manage operational tasking and material readiness, and continue to showcase the fighting spirit of our ship's namesake.

"It is truly an honor to be a part of such an amazing team of professionals and to watch them operate and achieve continued success, no matter the challenge."

The crew has been working nearly non-stop since last September, conducting exercises, completing national tasking, participating in training and certification events.

"Between long days, even longer underways, and working through INSURV checks, along with normal maintenance, everyone was able to pull together and be fully prepared," said Fire Controlman 3rd Class Daniel R. Keyes. "With the help of our petty officers, chiefs, the forceful back up of our division officers and the leadership from our department heads, we passed INSURV with flying colors. I am proud to be a part of this amazing crew and amazing ship!"

Upon learning of the crew's INSURV score, Mr. Dan Dunham, father of the ship's namesake, Marine Corps Cpl. Jason Dunham, stated, "We are proud to hear such great news, and Jason is proud too. He was always meticulous and always kept his equipment to the highest standard."

USS Jason Dunham always strives to uphold and continue Jason's legacy with positive energy, motivation, and extraordinary determination. Their success at INSURV is evidence of the team's commitment to their heroic namesake and warfighting readiness.
