The Office of Supply Corps Personnel roadshow made a stop in Japan to provide career guidance and advice to supply officers at Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center (NAVSUP FLC) Yokosuka, Aug. 22.

The Office of Supply Corps Personnel produces the annual roadshow and dispatches detailers to commands worldwide as a way to facilitate the career management process for Supply Corps officers.

Capt. Martin Fields, a former commanding officer for NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka, brought his team to the enterprise to field questions and offer insight into what it takes to advance up the Supply Corps career ladder.

"You need to have tough visible tours that balance skillset development and operational experience," said Fields. "If you take anything away from what I'm saying today, it needs to be the importance of balance, in career and life, and knowing what your goal is."

NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka Commanding Officer Capt. Jeffery Davis reiterated the importance of goal-setting and skillset development to the 53 supply officers from across Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka that attended the roadshow.

"There are no throw-away tours. Each tour is an opportunity to build skillsets and increase your value on the Navy team. Whether it is warfare qualifications, subspecialty development or attending Naval Postgraduate School, it's imperative that you maximize each opportunity," said Davis, an NPS graduate and recipient of the NPS Graduate School of Business and Public Policy Louis D. Lisken Award for academic excellence.

"For instance, an FLC tour can be a great opportunity to build skillsets ranging from contracting, integrated logistics support and operational logistics (OPLOG) petroleum to OPLOG planner and financial management," said Davis.

In order to create a successful career strategy, junior supply officers must focus on the quality of operational tours or shore billets that directly support operational units. They must learn what the warfighter needs while also building their individual skillsets.

On the other hand, senior officers usually move on to more concentrated billets that will provide opportunities for leadership development.

Regardless of where a Supply Corps officer is in their career, there are fundamental building blocks required for advancement, including identifying quality tours that enable competition; developing specific qualifications and skillsets; and sustaining superior performance over the long term. These key areas provide a line of operation development necessary for advancement throughout a naval career.

"The roadshow was a great way to learn where we currently stand in our career and what tools we require to continue in that career," said Lt. Jomer Belisario, NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka regional transportation officer. "It will help me make the most out of my career as a Supply Corps officer."

NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka is one of eight fleet logistics centers under NAVSUP Global Logistics Support (GLS).
