The 52nd annual Navy League Sea-Air-Space Exposition kicked off at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, April 3. A "Sea Services Update," panel discussion kicked off three days of talks about the state of each respective service, the future of maritime operations, and the importance of partnerships. The panel was led by Adm. Charles D. Michel, vice commandant of the Coast Guard; Adm. William F. Moran, vice chief of naval operations; Gen. Glenn M. Walters, assistant commandant of the Marine Corps; and Joel Szabat, executive director, Maritime Administration (MARAD). "If you look at where the Navy is today, it's exactly where it has been for arguably the last three decades," Moran said. "Roughly thirty to thirty-five percent of the force is deployed today. It's around the order of 90 to 95 ships anywhere around the globe, and that hasn't changed, but we are smaller than ever." During the panel, Moran discussed the national priorities of the Navy. "Our priority is to maintain the readiness we have achieved in the short run and keep it whole," Moran said. More than 300 exhibitors will display their products to an estimated 12,000 attendees and representatives from 25 countries, as well as U.S. government officials. "The Navy-Marine Corps team is grateful for this unique opportunity to interact with defense leaders and industry professionals who are fundamental to the progression of our maritime forces," Richardson said. The Navy League's Sea-Air-Space Exposition was founded in 1965 as a means to bring the U.S. defense industrial base, U.S. private-sector companies and key military decision makers together for an annual innovative, educational, professional and maritime-based event located in the heart of Washington, D.C. Sea-Air-Space is the largest maritime exposition in the U.S. and continues as an invaluable extension of the Navy League's mission of maritime policy education and sea service support.
