Commanding officers from the Navy, Marines, Air Force and Army signed the Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month Proclamation April 1, in recognition of the continued year-round effort in keeping service members and civilian personnel safe.

Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month is a focused time when both military and civilian sexual assault organizations engage their respective communities in outreach activities.

Activities at Camp Lemonnier were planned to engage both Camp Lemonnier and Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa personnel. The proclamation signing was the kick off for events scheduled during the entire month of April.

Acting Sexual Assault Response Coordinator Chief Navy Gunner's Mate Joseph Taylor said the collaboration efforts were coordinated by several military and civilian organizations and associations at Camp Lemonnier.

"To have a successful and significant event, it takes the coordination and continued support of our staff and victim advocate volunteers," Taylor said.

The 'Amazing Race' was one of several events coordinated through the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response victim advocates and took place April 2. The event lasted nearly two hours and involved team building activities that consisted of a five station obstacle course of games, physical conditioning, and charades.

SAPR volunteers also coordinated a night filled with music, poetry and spoken word, April 6, providing insight and awareness to attendees through the eyes of a victim.

Events will continue next week with the Home Run Derby being held April 11. SAPR representatives will continue to engage all respective services with activities through April 30.

Camp Lemonnier is a U.S. Navy-led installation operated by Commander, Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia via U.S. Naval Forces Africa and Commander, Navy Installations Command.
