Singer was recognized for intervening during a suicide attempt on the Coronado Bay Bridge when a distressed man attempted to leap to his death. The award honors America’s junior enlisted service members who represent the standards and values of their respective branch of service as demonstrated through acts of heroism or valor.
“She absolutely deserves this honor,” said Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 14 Commanding Officer Cmdr. Tony Perez. “Her actions could have been a small act of kindness, but her actions were truly lifesaving and her genuine concern and selflessness saved this man’s life.”
Singer was driving across the Coronado Bay Bridge toward the city of Coronado when she spotted what she thought was a stranded motorist. When she stopped to inquire if the man standing next to the stopped car needed assistance, she saw the man place a rope around his neck then move toward the rail on the side of the bridge. Singer then grabbed the back of his shirt and pulled him back. When she asked the man what he was doing he replied ‘Today is my day to die.’
“That was the most alarming thing. He had made a decision and he was okay with that,” said Singer. “I’ve experienced people in my life that have taken their own [life] so I was in a state of shock. I was not thinking. I had to make decisions within seconds.”
While holding on to the man, Singer noticed a firearm in his pocket, which she immediately removed from him. She then flagged down another motorist and instructed the driver to lock the weapon in his trunk and notify police. Singer walked the distressed man to her vehicle and continued talking with him until the California Highway Patrol arrived on the scene.
“Even at your worst days, just know that people care,” said Singer. “Our purpose, not as an individual but as a group, is to help other people. What are we doing here on this Earth if that is not the case?”
Bob Kurjian, the president of USO West Region and a U. S. Navy Reserve commander, echoed this sentiment during the award presentation to Singer.
“We are honored to be here today to recognize Petty Officer Singer,” said Kurjian. “Her willingness to assist a stranger undoubtedly saved his life. We thank Petty Officer Singer for her dedicated service in the United States Navy and her heroic actions have made a profound difference in the lives of others.”
