Southwest Regional Maintenance Center Hosts COVID-19 Safe Holiday Lights Display

21 December 2020

From SWRMC Public Affairs Office

Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) joint associations hosted a holiday lights drive through display for SWRMC families on Dec. 19.

The joint associations included SWRMC Morale, Wellness and Recreation (MWR) program, Chief Petty Officers’ Association, First Class Petty Officers’ Association, Junior Enlisted Association and Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions.

“Our joint associations are doing an excellent job of taking care of our SWRMC families this holiday season,” said Capt. David Hart, SWRMC’s commanding officer. “Despite facing restrictions on events, they were able to find a way to host a festive, safe event for our employees and their families to enjoy.”

Given the current event restrictions, the associations decided to host a drive through lights display to give employees a safe holiday event to attend with their families. All attendees remained in their cars and were directed by event staff through the display.

In addition to a light display, the event included a gift card drawing for military and civilian attendees and treat bags for children. Prizes were awarded for attendees in the categories of Most Festive Family, Best Decorated Vehicle and Best Ugly Sweater. A photo booth was also set up at the end of the drive with all necessary precautions in place for families to take a family photo.

“It has been a tough year for a lot of people and it is ending with a lot of holiday events being canceled as we face increasing concerns over the spread of COVID-19,” said Chief Rebecca Brown, SWRMC’s MWR Officer. “We wanted to host an event that families could enjoy without having to worry about their health and safety.”

This is SWRMC’s first year hosting a holiday light display.

“At SWRMC, we strive to support the Fleet and the warfighter on a daily basis; however, it is equally important that we are taking care of each other and ending the year with this morale boasting event is one way we can come together to do that,” added Hart.

SWRMC is meeting its mission to provide superior ship maintenance, modernization, technical support, and training for the Pacific Fleet.
