The visit follows the French Marine Nationale’s Charles de Gaulle carrier strike group assuming duties as Commander, Task Force (CTF) 50 for the second time. France previously led CTF-50 from December 2015 to March 2016.
The Charles de Gaulle carrier strike group has been operating in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations (AOO) since early March as part of its Clemenceau 21 deployment. The guided-missile destroyer USS Laboon (DDG 58) is supporting Charles de Gaulle while it is operating in 5th Fleet.
“As CTF-50, the Charles de Gaulle Carrier Strike Group Commander leads the planning and execution of strike missions for the U.S 5th Fleet; this is U.S.-French trust at its zenith,” said Paparo.
U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations encompasses about 2.5 million square miles of water area and includes the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean. The expanse is comprised of 20 countries and includes three critical choke points at the Strait of Hormuz, the Suez Canal and the Strait of Bab al Mandeb at the southern tip of Yemen.
