Sailors assigned to USS Constitution will participate in a Navy Office of Community Outreach Navy Week in Miami March 25-31.

The primary purpose of the Navy Week program is to increase the public’s awareness of the Navy by presenting the Navy to Americans who live in cities that normally do not have a significant naval presence. Miami Navy Week will showcase the mission, capabilities and achievements of the U.S. Navy and provide residents the opportunity to meet with Sailors firsthand. 

Constitution Sailors will kick off their participation with a tour of the Miami Dolphins football stadium. They will present the story of ‘Old Ironsides’ at the Miami Sequarium, the Frost Museum of Science, the Coconut Grove Sailing Club Spring Break Camp, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami Dade Branch. Additionally, Constitution Sailors will present the colors during the Miami Navy Week Proclamation Ceremony and “American Steel, a 9/11 Observance” at the Miami Military Museum. Later in the week, they will spend time at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and at Navy Day with the Miami Marlins.

“The city of Miami and her community played host to USS Constitution during her National Cruise in 1931,” said Nathaniel R. Shick, USS Constitution’s 75th Commanding Officer. “Displaying great pride in their contribution to the nationwide “Pennies Campaign”, Miami residents rallied in the thousands to welcome ‘Old Ironsides’ to their beloved city. Constitution’s Sailors are looking forward to engaging with the community this week and sharing their experiences serving in today’s Navy and aboard the World’s Oldest Commissioned Warship Afloat.”  

This is the third of 13 Navy Weeks Constitution Sailors will participate in this year. They have participated in similar activities in Mobile, Ala. and Charleston, S.C.

Now a featured destination on Boston’s Freedom Trail, Constitution and her crew of active duty U.S. Navy Sailors offer community outreach and education about the ship's history and the importance of naval sea power to more than 500,000 visitors each year. Constitution is berthed at Pier One in Charlestown Navy Yard.
