Under Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly visited Romania Dec. 13-14 as part of a multination trip to the European region focused on strengthening partnerships and cooperation. During the two-day visit, Modly met with the U.S Embassy deputy chief of mission, chief of Romanian Naval Forces, Romanian minister of National Defense, Romanian commander of the 99th Military Base Deveselu, and other senior U.S. and Romanian military and civilian officials. “Meeting with these senior Romanian officials and listening to their views provided us with an opportunity to advance our strengthening relationship and our mutual desire for peace and security in the region" said Modly. Under Secretary Modly also toured the U.S. Naval Support Facility (NSF) Deveselu and the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System while meeting with Sailors who support both entities. “Romania is a vital NATO ally with a professional and highly credible military that is well respected throughout the world,” said Modly. “We are honored to continue our long-term cooperation with this strategic ally who continues to demonstrate our shared commitment to security and the rule of law in the Black Sea region and beyond.” A common theme promoted by the Romanian commander of the 99th Military Base Deveselu – who is the host of U.S. personnel at NSF Deveselu – is one team, one fight. “We continue to train with our Romanian allies, participate in regional exercises and stand ready to respond to regional threats,” said Modly. “The U.S. stands with Romania in our commitment to regional security and collective defense." Prior to this stop, Modly was in Norway Dec. 10-13. His week-long trip to Europe is in direct support of the second line of effort of the National Defense Strategy: Strengthening partnerships and alliances.
