Navy Capt. Carey Pantling assumed command of the Submarine Maintenance Engineering Planning and Procurement (SUBMEPP) Activity during an assumption of command ceremony at the Squalus Memorial on the shipyard here today at 10 a.m.

SUBMEPP, located on the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, manages engineering programs to support maintenance and modernization of Navy submarines.

Regarding submarine maintenance, Pantling said, "Our challenge is to maximize submarine operating life through technical evaluation and understanding. We will have to explore every alternative to enable the fleet to get the most they can out of these critical resources to provide excellence to the fleet. That, in a nutshell, is what we do."

Pantling graduated from the University of Florida in 1993, receiving a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering and his naval commission. He later went on to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, where he earned master's degrees in astronautical and mechanical engineering. Pantling was on the commissioning crew of the ballistic missile submarine USS Maine (SSBN-741) and was the engineering officer on the USS West Virginia (SSBN-736). He also completed shore duties at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and at the U.S. Pacific Fleet Headquarters in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

SUBMEPP is a Navy field activity under the Naval Sea Systems Command, Undersea Warfare Directorate located in Washington D.C.
