The Seawolf-class attack submarine USS Connecticut (SSN 22) arrived at Fleet Activities Yokosuka Aug. 13 for a visit as part of its Indo-Pacific patrol.
Connecticut is one of the Navy’s most advanced undersea warfighting platforms, and unique among U.S. submarines. Designed to be the world’s quietest submarines, they are less detectable at high speed than a Los Angeles-class submarine is while sitting next to the pier. Advanced weaponry and tactical capability, combined with an increased weapons load of Mark 48 multipurpose torpedoes allow Seawolf-class submarines to operate from under the arctic ice to shallow water close to shore.
Connecticut’s visit strengthens the already positive alliance between the U.S. and Japan, and demonstrates the U.S. Navy’s commitment to regional stability and maritime security in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations. The visit also gives the crew a chance at meaningful interaction with the local community.
“The last time a Seawolf visited Yokosuka was in 2012,” said Cmdr. Carl Trask, Connecticut’s commanding officer. “Sending our most capable assets into this theater is a testament to how much we value our partnership with Japan and the rest of our allies in the Indo-Pacific.” “The crew has been training and working really hard to get ready for this deployment,” said Master Chief Navigation Electronics Technician Joshua Ayers, Connecticut’s chief of the boat. “This port visit will allow them must deserved rest and the chance to experience the Japanese culture.”
For many of Connecticut’s crewmembers, this is their first time in the region.
“I am very excited to visit Japan,” said Yeoman 2nd Class Carlos Rosa. “This is my first time outside of the United States. I most look forward to trying some of the local Japanese food and visiting Tokyo.”
Measuring more than 353 feet long and weighing more than 9,000 tons when submerged, Connecticut is the fastest, most heavily armed submarine in the world. Connecticut is one of three Seawolf-class submarines homeported in Bremerton, Washington. She recently participated in ICEX 2018, where she demonstrated the ability to operate in the challenging and complex Arctic environment.
