Training Support Center Hampton Roads (TSCHR) Student Management Office (SMO) welcomed about 2,000 students to Hampton Roads in a massive check-in following the holidays and snow closures, Jan. 16.

"This is one of the largest student check-ins we've had here in a while," said Lynwood Hardy, SMO assistant director. "We knew we were going to have a huge student turnout after the holiday stand-down and the blizzard, so, we made sure we were ready by manning each of the student management offices early."

As each student reported for training, he or she was checked in at one of TSCHR's five regional support offices located at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, NAS Oceana-Dam Neck, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek - Fort Story, Naval Support Activity (NSA) Northwest Annex, and Naval Station Norfolk. The Norfolk Office also operates three satellite service centers located at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Saint Julien's Creek Portsmouth and NSA Norfolk.

With the inclement weather, the staff also factored in a delay in operations aboard area bases.

"Our student management offices were ready to commence check-in and filling out paperwork to get students to their classes as fast as possible," said Hardy. "Our goal was to provide a smooth experience for every single one of these students."

SMO manages check-outs, student screenings, enrollments, graduations, service record entries, and pay documents. Last year, SMO supported 739 courses of instruction for 26 learning sites.

"We continuously exercise process improvement methodologies to streamline our processes, thus providing better care for students and significantly reducing costs for the learning centers we support," said Hardy. "SMO's continuous liaison with all support services providers ensures students are fully trained and transfer to the fleet on time."

SMO also directs the administrative needs of TSCHR personnel as well as learning site staff not co-located with their learning centers.

TSCHR provides centralized student management, which, covers a variety of support processes for the care and feeding of Sailors, Marines, Soldiers and Airmen from the U.S. armed forces as well as 23 allied nations.
