Naval Station Rota welcomed senior leadership from the eight installations assigned to Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA) for a meeting of the Executive Steering Committee (ESC), Oct. 24 to 27.

The event focused on sharing best practices, communicating EURAFSWA priorities as well as discussing challenges faced by installations Region-wide. This was the second year Rear Adm. Rick Williamson, commander, Navy Region EURAFSWA, led the committee through the event.

"Our Region is growing. Additional Combatant Command and Fleet Commander requirements are expanding throughout EURAFSWA to include two new installations," said Williamson. "The ESC is a way for us to talk with our base CO's to share best practices for dealing with our capacity challenges."

Navy Region EURAFSWA is a growing enterprise with a complex mission set that spans three continents, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Arabian Gulf, and from northern Europe into Africa.

At the conclusion of the ESC, Capt. Mike MacNicholl, commanding officer of Naval Station Rota, led a base tour for Williamson that focused on port operations, logistics, housing upgrades, air operations' facilities, and Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) facilities and services.

"We are the foundation for our warfighters operating in an increasingly complex environment," said MacNicholl. "It is critical we do everything we can to provide the capacity and capability they need to operate forward, deter conflict and if necessary fight and win."

Naval Station Rota provides operational platforms ashore that enable U.S., allied and partner nation forces to be where they are needed, when they are needed to ensure security and stability in Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia.

Just as a ship performs lines of operation that provide a capability, Navy Region EURAFSWA bases perform the same eight lines of operation to provide capability to the fleet, joint and allied forces. These eight lines of operation are: air operations, port operations, safety, security, housing, MWR, Fleet and Family Services and what is called the core: the fuels, water and power that keep the bases running. Through our lines of operation, our installations are force multipliers that maximize combat capability of operational units.
