Sailors assigned to Navy Operational Support Center Atlanta participated in the 65th annual Military Appreciation Luncheon hosted by the Atlanta Regional Military Affairs Council (ARMAC) and the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce, Nov. 13.

The luncheon was a celebration of Cobb County's military community, recognizing the service and sacrifices of men and women in uniform.

The keynote address was delivered by Barry Loudermilk, U.S. representative for Georgia's 11th Congressional District.

"One thing I've seen about heroes and veterans is that they never quit serving," said Loudermilk. "Once they take that oath, it's an oath for life. Veterans do what they do, but they don't seek recognition. They don't look for their stories to be told. They do what they do because they are preserving the idea of freedom and liberty to everyone. That spirit has been with the American service member since the beginning of this country."

Highlighted at the event was the presentation of the USO Patriot of the Year Award to former United States Senator Saxby Chambliss. The award was presented by the chairman of the USO of Georgia, attorney Susan Cahoon.

"Throughout his career, Mr. Chambliss has had a strong interest in defense of this country, support of those who have served, and the support of the communities which house and sustain the facilities in which those persons work and serve our country," said Cahoon.

Cahoon said that Mr. Chambliss continues to provide strong support toward combatting future threats to our national security and the threats of cyber terrorism.

"As I saw these men and women here today, in uniform, standing up, I am reminded that each and every one of them is here because they volunteered to protect freedom and democracy throughout the world," said Chambliss. "Thank you for your service, and thank you for your continued service to our country and to our community."
