Six Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) employees from a combined three different San Diego-based commands biked to work in honor of National Bike to Work Day, May 18.

The employees were from NAVSUP Global Logistics Support (GLS), NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) San Diego, and NAVSUP Business Supply Center (BSC).

Bike to Work Day is a national event celebrated annually in the United States on the third Friday in May as part of National Bike Month. This year the San Diego regional Bike to Work Day event was held on Thursday, the day prior to the national event.

Biking to work provides more than a convenient means to commute to work.

"I selfishly bike in to work 2-5 times a week depending on my schedule and the weather. It only takes me a few more minutes than using a car, and I don't sit in traffic," said Cmdr. Mark Sheffield, NAVSUP GLS deputy director for logistic operations.

"I am energized, burn some calories, and enjoy the outdoors in beautiful San Diego, and I get to do this twice a day!" said Sheffield.

Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling, and to encourage more folks to give cycling a try.

"How can you beat the multiple benefits of biking to work? It provides good exercise, saves money on gas, helps the environment and the fresh air is uplifting!" said Karl Pontau of the NAVSUP GLS logistics management program office.

Some San Diego-based employees bike directly from their homes, while others combine biking to work with utilizing public transportation systems such as the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System trolley.

Tim Higdon, also of the NAVSUP GLS logistics management program office, is one such commuter who combines biking to work with taking the trolley on a regular basis.

"I bike to work because I like the fresh air and scenery as well as getting my daily exercise," said Higdon.

Bike Month 2017 promoted biking as an everyday, environmentally friendly, cost-saving commute choice.
