Active-duty and retired military members from all branches and their family members gathered to volunteer during National Family Volunteer Day at the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH) in Washington, D.C., Nov. 12.

The event started with opening remarks from Commandant, Naval District Washington Rear Adm. Chip Rock, who thanked the volunteers for their time and support.

"I think volunteering really is the heart and soul of our services and our country," said Rock.

Volunteers divided into different working groups to help with clean-up, visit residents' rooms, make holiday cards, wash wheelchairs, decorate and organize the home's library, and decorate the residential lobbies for the holiday season.

"It's an opportunity for members from all branches to come and honor our residents by doing service projects that help beautify the home and give morale to the residents," said Amanda Jensema, AFRH recreation therapist and acting volunteer coordinator. "It's a nice way to give back."

The event has been going on for 11 years, and Jensema said it keeps growing.

"It always seems like every year it gets a little bigger, which I love because that just means more people are having the opportunity to come to the home, and meet our residents and learn a little bit about their history," said Jensema. "That's really my favorite part."

Retired U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class William A. Stephens, an AFRH resident, has been in charge of the card-making volunteers for four years and noted the cards' importance.

"They let the residents know that people know they're here, and they appreciate them," said Stephens.

Stephens also spoke about the volunteers' impact on the residents, including himself.

"They sit around with us and talk to us," said Stephens. "The kids talk to us. We stay in communication with the outside world, and it's really nice. I enjoy it. "

Chief Petty Officer Alicia Jackson, who works at the Pentagon, came to the event with her son, two nieces, and sister. She regularly participates in community service with her family.

"It's always good to come in and bring a smile to people's faces," said Jackson.

Jackson said it's important people don't forget about America's veterans.

"It's Veteran's Day weekend, and what's more important than to come out, and spend part of your weekend volunteering?" said Jackson. "It's the best way of giving back."
