Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 2 held a change of command ceremony aboard its flagship USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), Nov. 18.

Rear Adm. Kenneth R. Whitesell relieved Rear Adm. Brian E. Luther and assumed duties as CSG-2 commander before a crowd of distinguished guests to include previous CSG-2 commanders, current warfare commanders, strike group commanding officers and staff.

"I think it's fair to say that no team has been better prepared to deploy than George H.W. Bush Strike Group, under [Luther's] leadership," said Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet Vice Adm. Nora Tyson, guest speaker and a former CSG-2 commander.

Luther, who assumed command in August 2015, guided CSG-2 through a demanding, operationalized Optimized Fleet Response Plan work-up cycle, leaving them poised for a successful combat deployment.

"I am keenly aware that this is your proverbial stock of thoroughbreds. You have built this team and I'm very fortunate to be on the receiving end of a well-oiled machine," Whitesell said to Luther in his remarks.

Luther, who will report later this month as deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for Budget (FMB) and director, Fiscal Management Division, N82, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, credited the success of his tour to his family's love and support; leadership exemplified by the previous strike group commanders; the teamwork of the warfare commanders; and the leadership demonstrated by his staff in supporting the strike group team.

"It's been an honor and a privilege sharing part of your journey as the commander of this strike group," said Luther, speaking to the audience.

Carrier Strike Group 2 consists of its flagship, USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77); Carrier Air Wing 8 staff and squadrons; Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 22 staff and ships; and guided-missile cruisers USS Hue City (CG 66), USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) and USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55).
