Cmdr. Gregg Gellman, Navy Medicine East (NME) deputy chief of staff for Base Operations and Medical Installations, had the honor of being one of the coaches for the Army-Navy Hockey game at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. Dec. 5.

The Washington Capitals hosted the Army-Navy hockey game to celebrate the spirit of the well-known sports rivalry between the United States Naval Academy (USNA) and United States Military Academy, two of the nation's military academies.

Gellman was the only Navy Medicine person selected to be on the roster and was not only the defense coach, but also the back-up goalie.

"I was honored to be asked to run the defense for the Navy team. It was a great experience and I met some great guys, other hockey players throughout the Navy," said Gellman. "We look forward to avenging our loss next year."

Vice Adm. Ted Carter, USNA Superintendent, was the captain of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard players. The captain of the Army team was Gen. Mark A. Milley, chief of staff for the U.S. Army, coached the Army and Air Force players.

Even though the Navy scored the first goal, and had a 2-1 lead in the second period, the Army won 5-3.

The Army-Navy hockey game followed the Capitals vs. Sabres hockey game and featured local military hockey players from all five branches of service.

NME is one of two regional commands that manage Navy Medicine's global health care network. It oversees the effectiveness and efficiency of the delivery of medical, dental and other health care services to approximately one million patients across almost 100 facilities-including the Tidewater Enhanced Multi-Service Market which brings together Naval Medicine Center Portsmouth, U.S. Air Force Hospital Langley and McDonald Army Health Center. Plus, its public health extends globally.
