Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Energy Office celebrated its 64-year anniversary August 22.
Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Energy Office celebrated its 64-year anniversary August 22.

The NAVSUP Energy Office is the NAVSUP Global Logistics Support (GLS) petroleum product and services lead, which serves as the Navy and Marine Corps' Service Control Point (SCP) for bulk POL (petroleum, oil and lubricants), providing logistics support services to operational commanders. It is staffed by some 40 Navy and Marine Corps service members as well as government civilians.

NAVSUP GLS Commander Rear Admiral James McNeal said, "NAVSUP Energy is not only an important part of the NAVSUP GLS team, but an important part of the broader Navy-Marine Corps team. For the past 64 years they have kept our equipment fueled and running, using cutting-edge technology and materials on a global scale."

NAVSUP Energy traces its roots back to 1952 when it was established as the Fuel Supply Office, then later re-designated the U.S. Navy Fuel Supply Office. In 1973 it became the Navy Petroleum Office, and in 1995 it moved from its home of 30 years at Cameron Station in Alexandria, Va. to its current home at the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Headquarters Building at Fort Belvoir.

In 2001, to reflect the command's support to the U.S. Marine Corps, it became the Naval Petroleum Office, and later the Naval Operational Logistics Support Center (NOLSC) - Petroleum. In 2010, it was named the Commander, Fleet & Industrial Supply Centers (COMFISCSC) NAVSUP Energy office until finally, on July 1, 2011; it received its current moniker, NAVSUP Global Logistics Support (GLS) NAVSUP Energy Office (Code 70).

Speaking of the 64-year milestone, NAVSUP Energy Requirements Division Head Kelli Thorpe said, "We've been celebrating our anniversary for as long as I can remember."

NAVSUP Energy is co-located with the Air Force and Army SCPs in the DLA McNamara Headquarters complex at Fort Belvoir, Va. With a team of engineers, logistics specialists, chemists and experts in naval petroleum requirements, NAVSUP Energy represents the Navy's interests in developing requirements, policies and procedures to support Bulk Fuel needs.

NAVSUP Energy supports DoD/SECNAV Energy goals through membership in Navy Task Force Energy and participates in the Navy's certification of fuels derived from alternative and renewable sources. NAVSUP Energy assists in procurement and logistics for alternative fuels initiatives with Defense Logistics Agency Energy and the other Military Services.
