Sailors from Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Philadelphia volunteered at the Pocono Raceway during the NASCAR event, Windows 10-400, July 31 to August 2.
Sailors from Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Philadelphia volunteered at the Pocono Raceway during the NASCAR event, Windows 10-400, July 31 to Aug. 2. A total of 24 chiefs and 26 first class petty officers from recruiting stations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland met in different groups over three days and helped at the raceway by escorting general spectators to their seats. The recruiting district's Chief's Mess coordinated the volunteering as part of CPO-365. "This is the first year we have volunteered on this large of a scale," said Chief Navy Counselor Robert Lutz. "It was nice to have people use some of their personal time to support their respective mess, and this gives the command a greater sense of unity on and off duty." Lutz also mentioned that it's the organic nature of NASCAR racing and its need for speed like ships at sea that creates an important connection with the Navy. "It's good for Sailors to have a presence at any NASCAR event, even in a subtle way," said Lutz. Machinist's Mate 1st Class Adrian Todden had never been to a NASCAR event or the Pocono Raceway. "Overall it was an interesting experience and the staff there was courteous and professional," said Todden. "It was good to get out of the normal recruiting environment." Todden also explained his broader vision of what it means to be a Sailor, a volunteer, and a recruiter, all in one. "I like volunteering in many different ways," said Todden. "We need to show future Sailors that we are the face of the Navy. We need to appreciate where we're from, and we need to give back. It's important to keep that in mind. Anything we do is bigger than the individual." The Pocono Raceway contains three 2.5 mile stretches of lanes connected by turns to form a track known as the "Trippy Triangle." The raceway sponsors many events throughout the year, such as "The Windows 10-400," which required NASCAR drivers to complete 160 laps totaling 400 miles. Some of the competitors during the race included Dale Earnheart Jr., Jeff Gordon, and Danica Patrick.
