USS Dewey (DDG 105) held a change of command ceremony on board Naval Base San Diego, Aug. 14.

During the ceremony, Cmdr. Mikael A. Rockstad turned over command of the guided missile destroyer to Cmdr. Abigail A. Hutchins.

Dewey recently completed a 10-month-deployment with the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group and participated in Seattle Sea Fair.

"Dewey has been challenging and rewarding," said Rockstad. "I'll certainly miss the outstanding wardroom and crew and couldn't have given command of the vessel to more capable hands."

Hutchins had previously served as the ship's executive officer and assumed command as part of the Navy's fleet-up program.

"I'm honored to assume command of Dewey, and I look forward to leading this outstanding crew," said Hutchins upon taking command.

Dewey is currently in a ship's restricted availability (SRA) period but is maintaining the ship at the high level of readiness for future operations.

Commissioned in 2010, DDG 105 is named after Adm. George Dewey who commanded the Asiatic Station from the cruiser Olympia. Shortly after the onset of the Spanish-American War, Dewey led his squadron of warships into Manila Bay on April 30, 1898.

The next morning, his squadron destroyed the Spanish fleet in only two hours without a single American loss. A widely popular hero of his day, Dewey was commissioned admiral of the Navy in March 1903. Two previous ships have proudly carried his name.
