NECC Hosts G.I. Bill Benefits Briefing for Sailors and their Families

19 August 2015
With school starting soon, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) Sailors and their families got a jump start on understanding how to use their G.I. Bill benefits while attending a briefing at the Midway Auditorium on Joint Expeditionary Base (JEB) Little Creek-Fort Story, Aug. 18.
NECC's Family Readiness Director, May Jacobs coordinated the briefing with assistance from experts from JEB Little Creek's Fleet and Family Support Center, Virginia Tidewater Consortium's Educational Opportunity Center and Veteran's Affairs.

NECC's Command Master Chief (SCW/FMF/SW) Corey Heinrich emphasized the importance of using the benefits you've earned.

"Today's briefing provided valuable information that will assist high school junior and seniors, parents of all high school students, and those adult learners opting to return to college later in life," said Heinrich.

Jacobs, who retired from the U.S. Navy, discussed her plans to use the G.I. Bill benefits she earned.

"Being able to transfer my G.I. Bill benefits to my children has lifted a huge burden off my shoulders," said Jacobs, who added the briefing not only provided her with insight on how to transfer her benefits, but also how to apply for scholarships and other sources of financial aid to fund their post-secondary education.

"Educating our military members and their families about their education and VA benefits is just another way we should show our support and gratitude for the sacrifice they make on a daily basis," said Rau Cunnikin, JEB Little Creek's Fleet and Family Support Center Representative.
